Christmas morning gifts for Bug

the aftermath of gift opening

Christmas Day was another interesting adventure..Again, it started out nice and normal with coffee, Christmas music and the exchanging of gifts. Laine woke up at like 6:30 so we all got up and started our Christmas morning festivities. It's a tradition at our house to do stockings, then cards, then gifts. This year, Santa came to visit Laine so we watched her "experience" that first. We all got great things and of course Laine made out with the most stuff this year!!
We decided to make a fire and at first everything was going great. My mom bought a Dura-Flame log and asked my brother to add it to the fire. Well, she forgot to mention that it couldn't burn with any real logs, so the ones that were already in the fire had to wait to burn-out before he could add the Dura-Flame log. Since that important bit of information was never relayed to my bro, he went ahead and added the log to the already existing fire. After we all opened our presents and started doing other things, we walked back into the living room to notice that the smoke was billowing out of the fireplace which of course didn't seem normal. About 10 minutes later, we all started to panic because the whole front part of the house started to get really smokey and we weren't really sure how to stop it. Jackson decided the only way to cease the smoke was to put it out with a fire extinguisher, which naturally only made the situation worse. There really was no other option though. I had taken Laine to the back of the house before any of it got really bad, so I missed a lot of the action. Apparently, the house was just filled with smoke and the thought of calling the fire department was tossed around. They opened all the doors and windows and Jackson put a fan on the fireplace to try and get the smoke to trail out of the house. My brother used a shovel to take all the ashy pieces out into the backyard so the snow could put out any leftover fire. My mom was completely distraught and she really thought her house and Chrismtas were ruined. Once things started to calm down a bit, Jackson, Laine and I high-tailed it out of there so she wouldn't inhale any smoke and went over to Jackson's other grandparents' house. Unfortunately I didn't snap any pics of the event, but I'm sure it won't be forgotten about in the Byrd house for many years to come!
