Ok, so Laine and I went back to the surgeon who removed her cyst this morning for a post-op check-up. He looked her over and said everything looked great. Then, he asked me a few questions about my pregnancy. I thought I had a pretty easy pregnancy, but apparently there were some unknown complications.
There are a few things that could have caused the cyst and for me to go into premature labor. Most of the things he asked me I told him that that did not apply to me, like: RH factor, maternal diabetes and some other stuff. Then, he asked me if I had excessive amounts of fluid during my labor and I told him yes. My labor and delivery nurse actually told me that I probably lost 15 lbs due to excess fluid. Apparently this is called Polyhydramnios. It's a condition that causes excess fluid build up in the amniotic sac. It was probably caused because of the cyst in Laine's little body. Since babies take in the amniotic fluid as their source of food the amount of fluid in the amniotic sac should stay pretty balanced. If the baby is not able to take in the amniotic fluid, it causes build up resulting in Polyhydramnios. The risk factors include preterm labor and premature rupture of the membranes (water breaks).
It was interesting to me to find this out. I am definitely going to tell my doctor about this and I probably will have an amniocentisis during my next pregnancy. The surgeon did tell me that he has never seen something like this happen twice, so more than likely I am fine...but you can never be too sure!
